Nutrition and Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes: Special considerations

People with type 1 diabetes take insulin to keep blood glucose in a safe range. The newer insulin is more user-friendly in that it can be taken any time during a meal which reduces the chance of hypoglycemia if a meal is delayed. Even with these advances, the person with type 1 diabetes need to heed to certain nutritional guidelines to ensure blood glucose remains under control:

  • Be extremely careful with alcohol consumption and never drink without eating as well.
  • prevent hypoglycemia by never missing a meal. Snacking during meal intervals is an even better idea since insulin is always present whether food is available or not.
  • Test blood glucose frequently and carry nutritious snacks to prevent hypoglycemia.

Type 2 diabetes: Special Considerations
Most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight and need to be concerned with losing and controlling weight. Even losing a little bit of weight can rapidly decrease blood glucose, blood pressure, blood fats and cholesterol. This is in addition to the other health benefits mentioned earlier in the lesson. Some nutritional considerations for type 2 diabetes are:

  • People with type 2 diabetes typically present with a condition called insulin resistance which is associated with an increased occurrence of coronary artery disease. So, be aware of dietary fat, especially food that increase triglycerides and cholesterol, which is linked to coronary artery disease.
  • Hypertension expedites diabetic complications and is prevalent in both types of diabetes. Eating less salt will help in this situation.
