Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is recommended as the feeding of choice for all infants in the United States until they are four to six months of age, unless there is some medical complication that requires another feeding option. Breast milk is highly absorbable due to the high bioavailability of its nutrients.

Research suggests that breast milk protects against food allergies; chronic diseases such as type I diabetes, Crohn's disease, and lymphoma that are associated with the immune system and which develop later in childhood; and infectious diseases, especially those which affect the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems.
