Butter Substitutes

Benecol and Take Control are two butter substitutes that were introduced in May 1999. Both products are fortified with plant sterols and have been shown to reduce cholesterol.

Plant sterols have a structure similar to cholesterol. They trick the body into absorbing the sterols rather than true cholesterol. This in turn reduces total cholesterol and LDL, the 'bad' cholesterol.

Benecol's plant sterols are derived from wood pulp, while Take Care's sterols are derived from soybeans. Neither agent alters the taste or smell of the 'butter.'

In addition to its use as a spread, Benecol can be used in frying and baking. Take Care is not recommended for these purposes.
