Asthma Library: What triggers Asthma Nocturnal asthma In all types of asthma, symptoms frequently worsen at night. Nocturnal asthma is generally at its worst at approximately 4:00 am, when airway constriction can be exacerbated by the daily variation in airway tone and reactivity. Nocturnal asthma can also develop as a complication of pneumonia, if large amounts of secretions from the nose and throat are aspirated. This process occurs mainly in patients with diminished levels of consciousness due to drugs or alcohol use, general anesthesia, seizures, or neurological problems.
