If you thought people with diabetes could only shop in the sugar-free aisles of the supermarket, think again. People with diabetes can eat the same foods that are good for everyone. These include foods that are low in fat, salt and sugar, and high in fiber such as beans, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Eating right will help you reach and maintain a healthy weight, keep your blood sugar in a good range, and prevent heart and blood vessel disease. If you use insulin, you should give yourself a shot before you eat, eat around the same time and eat the same amount of food every day. Bonus tip: Don't skip a meal if you've already given yourself an insulin shot, because your blood sugar may go too low. If you don't use insulin, you're eating schedule doesn't have to be so strict, but it is important to follow your meal plan and not to skip meals especially if you take diabetes pills. Skipping meals may make you eat more at your next meal. For some people, it is better to eat several small meals during the day than to eat one or two big meals.
