Give me something good to eat

If you thought people with diabetes could only shop in the sugar-free aisles of the supermarket, think again. People with diabetes can eat the same foods that are good for everyone. These include foods that are low in fat, salt and sugar, and high in fiber such as beans, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Eating right will help you reach and maintain a healthy weight, keep your blood sugar in a good range, and prevent heart and blood vessel disease.

Aside from eating the right foods, meal times are also key in controlling your blood sugar. If you use insulin, you should give yourself a shot before you eat, eat around the same time and eat the same amount of food every day. Bonus tip: Don't skip a meal if you've already given yourself an insulin shot, because your blood sugar may go too low.

If you don't use insulin, you're eating schedule doesn't have to be so strict, but it is important to follow your meal plan and not to skip meals — especially if you take diabetes pills. Skipping meals may make you eat more at your next meal. For some people, it is better to eat several small meals during the day than to eat one or two big meals.

Get physical

Exercise is very good for you and your diabetes. Everything from a game of hoops to gardening in your backyard can keep you in tip-top shape. For people with diabetes, exercise is especially good because:

  • Exercise helps keep your weight down.
  • Exercise helps insulin work better to lower blood sugar.
  • Exercise is good for your heart and lungs.
  • Exercise gives you more energy.

Remember — if you haven't exercised in a while, it is a good idea to consult your physician and start slowly.

If you use insulin, there are also a few key steps you should follow:

  • Exercise after eating, not directly before.

  • Test your blood sugar before, during and after exercise. Do not exercise if your blood sugar is over 240.

  • Do not exercise right before you go to sleep, it could lower your blood sugar during the night.

If you don't use insulin, there are a few key steps for you to follow too:

  • See your doctor before starting an exercise program.
  • Test your blood sugar before and after exercising if you take diabetes pills.

When you exercise, it is important to carry an identification card or tag that says you have diabetes.
