What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a systemic illness that interferes with the body’s ability to process food into fuel. There are two types of diabetes, diabetes mellitus type 1(DM1) — also known as juvenile onset or insulin-dependent diabetes— and diabetes mellitus type 2(DM2)— also known as adult-onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes diabetes. Over 90 percent of the diabetes cases in the United States are type 2 diabetes.
