Asthma Library: What triggers Asthma

Drug-Induced Asthma

Between 5 and 20 percent of asthmatics have attacks triggered by medications and sulfites. The attacks are triggered by both sensitivities and allergies to medications including ibuprofen, aspirin, indomethacin and naproxen. For this reason, it is important to talk to your health care provider before starting any new medication.

The asthmatic attack usually begins within two hours of ingestion. Some people have angioedema, or allergic swelling, while others experience coughing and wheezing. In either instance, the attack can lead to respiratory failure.
