Why should you care?
High blood pressure is believed to be a contributing factor in the deaths of about 200,000 Americans each year. That's a pretty scary statistic! The good news is that with proper treatment and control, you can greatly reduce your risk hypertension-related death. Compared with people who are working with a physician to successfully control their hypertension, people with uncontrolled high blood pressure are three times more likely to develop coronary heart disease, six times more likely to develop congestive heart failure, and seven times more likely to have a stroke. Now, those are some odds worth paying attention to! This lesson is intended to give you a brief overview of the dangers and complications that your high blood pressure can lead to. The point to remember is that many of these effects can be less severe, or held at bay altogether through adequate control and treatment of your hypertension.
