Cardiac asthma is characterized by spasm of the airways caused by congestive heart failure. It is different from bronchial asthma, which is the type most people have. Cardiac asthma results from backup of blood in the lungs. This blood must reach the heart in order to get pumped to the rest of the body. When heart failure is present, backup occurs and congestion results.
Symptoms of cardiac asthma are similar to those of bronchial asthma. The attack may occur suddenly and produce wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath.
Cardiac asthma may be diagnosed through physical examination, x-ray and echocardiogram.
