Differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Some of the signs and symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are similar, but the diseases differ in many ways. Some of the important differences are:

Body weight: Generally, people with type 1 diabetes are of normal weight or may be rather thin. On the other hand, those with type 2 diabetes are commonly obese.

Glucose level: At disease onset, people with type 1 diabetes have higher glucose levels (300 to 400 mg/dl) than those with type 2 diabetes (200-250 mg/dl).

Age of onset: Generally, people with type 1 diabetes are younger (often small children) than those with type 2 (often over 40), however recently type 2 diabetes has been on the rise in teenagers.

Severity of onset: The onset of type 1 diabetes is generally quite severe, while the symptoms of type 2 diabetes appear gradually.
